HOT WAX 11.15.19

THIS WEEK!

Fresh from the press to your turntable.

Since we last spoke there is something I am dying to know, ‘how was everyone’s week of Fall’? That was a quick one and now straight to winter. Never fear because cold weather means hot toddies and rich stouts are soon to follow. It also means that RSD Black Friday 2019 is only a couple weeks away.

This week we have a ton of great re-issues and a smattering of new releases. I’m not sure if you noticed but country legend Garth Brooks is coming out with a box set. We thought we would see some of those come to the shop but alas, we were mistaken. You’ll have to go to our competitors Wal-Mart and Cracker Barrel to pick one up. Here’s a few of the stand outs we will receive this week along with the full list. I’m sure Wal-Mart and Craker Barrel will not be carrying a single one of these gems. Come on Garth!

I’m always a fan to hear what Will Oldham is going to release. No matter which of the many handles he has released music under in the past. His latest Bonnie “Prince” Billy record entitled I Made a Place comes out on vinyl this week and you should check this out along with some of his other work. One of my favorite covers is Johnny Cash covering Oldham’s I See a Darkness. It’s a well lived in take on a great song.

Lady Antebellum crashes to shore this with another mega album simply entitled Ocean. I’m sure it’ll be engulfing so grab a copy now. I hear they are nice folks.

Speaking of nice we have some great live recordings of some country greats. New West Records releases live recordings of Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash this week. They were all recorded live in Austin and you should add them to the collection.

The used and sale sections are full and waiting for you some come see us this weekend.

HOT WAX 11.08.19

THIS WEEK!

FRESH FROM THE PRESS TO YOUR TURNTABLE.

Last week I felt a deep and profound sadness fall upon me. It was not because of the cool air moving in or the asinine time change. What I felt was estranged from the onset of seasonal depression. It was much different than the coming Vitamin D deficiency my body will experience due to the lack of sunshine. This weight fell upon me soon after a grown man of legal drinking age sat down happily at the bar. With a cold beer in hand and new record face down on the bar he began to tell me a tale. He spoke of trials and tribulations. He told of almost being beaten to the point of giving up ever finding this record. I am proud to say that his journey finally found it’s end at Vinyl Tap, dear friends. We were able to fulfill his long and tenuous quest to own a copy of Blink 182’s Enema of the State. It made me sad that a grown man was on such a quest for this particular record, but I guess this is growing up.

*We at Vinyl Tap celebrate all types of music and music fans. In no way are we talking shit about Blink 182.

Now down to business. We have some really cool records this week and one from my homie Margo Price & Mercury Rev. They teamed up to release a 7” single. You should own this.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds come with another this week and I can’t wait. If you’ve never seen this man perform in person go do it. Hell, if you’ve never seen his movies or his art you should do that as well. Quite the dude. Grab this record.

Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders are apparently in on the joke this week with their new record. I stood behind he and Dave Grohl one night while we watched a screening of the HBO show they did. I may have been standing on their coattails now that I think about it.

Some favorites in the reissues this week. We have stuff from CAN, The Police, The Raincoats, Gene Clark, White Denim, Ty Segall, and Thee Oh Sees. Snatch these up.

To round it all out Amy Grant has a Christmas record out this week and Madonna has a bunch of reissues including Like A Virgin. I think that puts a nice bow on the week.

THIS WEEK!

Fresh from the press to your turntable.

As the weather changes and we move into fall it makes me start to feel nostalgic for the youthful times of yesteryear. Or maybe it’s the fact that the NIRVANA MTV Unplugged 25th Anniversary is in the reissue section this week and has me feeling my age. Damn, I remember when it aired. I digress dear friends.

Nashville native Rayland Baxter comes in smoldering this week with Good Mmornin'. This record is a touching tribute to the late rapper Mac Miller and was a very personal project to Ray. It features close confidants along with his own father Bucky playing on the record. I’ve taken a listen and you should be sure to check this one out.

Jeff Lynne From out of Nowhere!

That was close. Moving on we have some great reissues this week including a few from Social Distortion, R.E.M., and Los Straitjackets. I don’t know about you but I have an eye on those sweet Van Halen Japanese Singles 1978-1984. How could you not?

HALLO WEIRD NIGHT

HALLO-WEIRD NIGHT this thursday

Vinyl Tap welcomes everyone to come get weird this Halloween night! For the third year in a row we offer a fiendishly good time for free. You can dress up (or not) to party down with free live music, drink specials all night long, the Cold Lunch DJ’s, and a killer light show by Darling Lucifer!

We will have sets from Hervana playing Nirvana covers, The Pre-Menstruals covering The Cramps, and Travollta (???). Ghoul just have to be here to believe it!

The fun doesn’t end there because we have Caroline and Taylor from Cold Lunch keeping it creepy on the turntables. They’ll be splattering classic funk, soul, and disco jamz from the windows to the walls all night for you to ‘BOOO’gie down.

As always our shows are free but we have a donation box at the front door. 100% of that will go to the bands and light show. We suggest $5 but please feel free to drop in more.

THIS WEEK!

Fresh from the press to your turntable.

Tomorrow we get some crisp new releases along with some standards. This week A Giant Dog cover Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible, Grace Potter puts out her new record, James Blunt plays mind games, and Swans release their 15th record Leaving Meaning. Motorhead, Big Star, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Wipers, and the Ramones all see a fresh press this week. Mmmmm….

Often overlooked but a very influential album, Tremble Under Boom Lights, from Jonathan Fire*Eater comes to us from our buddies at III Man. Good work fellas, and speaking of good work. To those who reissued Saves The Day Through Being Cool on pink vinyl, we say thank you. Just when I thought my collection was looking tight you throw this gem my way.

Guided By Voices drops their 4o something million-tenth record. My old buddy Bobby Bare Jr. is out playing with Robert and the crew. I don’t know how his liver is holding up but I know that he’s having fun playing loud guitar in his favorite band.

Everyone loves the opening song from Big Little Lies and the singer responsible for the title song comes out with new music this week. From his debut EP to his latest offering Micheal Kiwanuka has hit the mark consistently with his output. This gentleman makes classy records and this is his second collaboration with producer Danger Mouse. Don’t sleep on this one.

Last but not least, the I.G.G.Y. has some new wax for you this week. You’ll probably have some time to consider this one. Good luck Iggy.

All these records are classics and future classics, to someone, so pick them up. Fresh from press to your turntable.

This event is strictly about having fun with your friends. It’s about trying something in public that you may only work up the courage to do after a couple Margarita’s at Chad’s house.

HOT WAX 10.18.2019

Serving up this week…

A white hot record from supergroup The Highwomen finds it’s way to wax. Once upon a few gigs ago, I had the pleasure of hearing a young songwriter named Maren start out in town. One Monday night she played a solo set opening for a Kentucky born country singer about to release his first record. Sturgill and she sang to about 30 people that night. Maren and The Highwomen don’t have to open for anyone because how in the hell could you follow them?

Ladies, leave a little room for the fellas if you will. Mark Lanagen’s Bubblegum is a classic for me and I’m looking forward to something new from the QOTSA collaborator. We also have a fresh new record from Jim James in the stacks. I’m always down to hear what he’s dishin’ up.

Don’t over do it on new releases and leave some room for the reissues. It’s a great chance to add some classics to the collection. Stiff Little Fingers, Roy Orbison, Marvin Gaye, Jimmy Page & the Black Crowes, along with the incomparable Etta James see new pressings this week. Sweet news indeed friends.

To round it all out this week we have two reissues from Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit. Jason’s wife and current ‘Highwoman’, Amanda Shires, worked at that previous gig with me. Fantastic people in my book so go out and get a slice of their music.

VINYL CLUB

FRIDAY NIGHT

Sign up @ 7:30 starts @ 8

You know you have a DJ handle ready to go at a moment’s notice and you’ve been dreaming of redeeming yourself after falling over the turntable at that house party. Chad still won’t let you live it down. Well here’s your chance, my friend! Call out the crew and show Chad what’s up.

VINYL CLUB is for everyone and regardless of your skill level we invite you to sign up for a 15 minute slot to DJ. Bring all your own records and get your set tight because you’ll want to keep all the heads in the place nodding and bobbing while you spin.

Vinyl Club is held twice monthly and is open to everyone. If you’re looking for a professional DJ to wow you with massive drops or slight of hand turntablery then this ain’t your scene. This event is strictly about having fun with your friends. It’s about trying something in public that you may only work up the courage to do after a couple Margarita’s at Chad’s house.

Our friends overseeing the decks will be by your side during your set so don’t fear! Start getting signed in early at 7:30. Needles drop at 8.

The community that the Vinyl Club gathers is fun and we ask that you respect it and enjoy yourself. Everyone is a member and remember it’s only 15 MINUTES so grab a drink and relax.

Have fun with it.
