This week,
Fresh from the press to your turntable!
Check out all the eclectic titles coming your way this week. Hot new wax in the new release and reissue stacks for your digging pleasure. The music of Idris Muhammad, a New Orleans native, has a flavor which has me mesmerized. The horns on the title track, Power of Soul, stir the memories of Mardi Gras parades of my youth. Powerful brass wailing down the avenue backed by a grooving drum line still gives me a chill. Horn phrases are broken up by musical sections that sonically sound as if they were lifted right off Bitches Brew. Like a great gumbo he combines a mixture of musical textures, simmering them down until they form something entirely unique. Do not sleep on this one.
The Drive By Truckers have a new record coming out this week. I’ve had the privilege of seeing them in many different settings over the years and can’t say enough great things about this band. Patterson played a solo show at a local venue years ago and I happened to be working that night. It was so cold that night, think 10 degrees in your mind, that only a handful of people made it out. He put on an amazing songwriting clinic for that small crowd, and he was a great hang before and after the set. Great folks who make great music. Grab one of these.
Megan Trainor has a new record out this week. It’s on white vinyl for you hard core Trainorheads. If you’re on the fence you may have some time to think about this one.
Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band’s Express Yourself is being reissued this week on vinyl and if you don’t know…well…you don’t know. Check out this weeks playlist for a taste. We also have some great reissues coming from Happy Mondays, Neneh Cherry, Suicidal Tendencies, and a live one from Daniel Johnston.
Hot wax, come and get it…
